Dr. Kaylene Lyons was born and raised on a small 4H dairy goat farm in Olney, Maryland where she first found her passion for animals and agriculture. Dr. Lyons received her bachelors of Science degree in Animal Science from Berry College in Rome, Georgia and then continued on at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Earning her DVM in 2018. Dr. Lyons became interested in veterinary medicine through her experiences in 4H with Dairy Quiz Bowl. She was fascinated by the anatomy, physiology and disease processes she learned about through that experience. Dr. Lyons
combined her interest in medicine with her passion for agriculture and decided to pursue care for animals to better protect our agriculture system and food safety. While in school at Berry College, Dr. Lyons worked as the student manager of the dairy. This is where she originally gained her experience and interest in the dairy industry. Dr. Lyons is a recipient of the AABP Education Grant in 2017 and AABP Externship Grant 2016. She is a proud member of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, American Veterinary Medical Association, American Dairy Goat Association, and Society of Theriogenology. Dr. Lyons professional interests include calf management, employee training, and milk quality management. Her personal interests include cooking, hiking, skiing, dancing (especially contra, swing, and salsa), exploring new areas and traveling (favorite country so far is Scotland), and having fun outside in nature. She resides in Geneseo, NY.
Dr. Lyons’ family is a very important part of her life and has been so supportive in her career vision. Her parents encouraged her every step of the way towards becoming a food animal veterinarian. Her older sister works as an epidemiologist in Maryland and her younger brother is a computer scientist working in California. Her furry family consists of her 8 year old lab mix, Brody. She adopted him her first year of vet school. He loves exploring outside and running around on farms. Back home in Maryland she owns four registered Toggenburg dairy goats – Charity, Liza, Morning Star, and Brigid.
